Cervical Spondylitis

Known as Arthritis of the Neck, Cervical osteoarthritis or Grivasandhigatvata; Cervical Spondylitis is the particular condition associated with pain at the back of the neck. The upper limbs may suffer from numbness and sensory losses due to this problem that affects mostly the people over sixty. But others are also no exception to this disorder that is caused due to trauma or injuries. Family history, smoking, depression, anxiety or job related compulsions may also be responsible for Cervical Spondylitis. Persons suffering from this problem usually complain of mild to severe pain and stiffness in the neck. Weakness and numbness in the fingers, arms and hands is also quite common among the patients. Muscle spasms and difficulty in walking and doing others tasks are also the signs of this disorder.


Diagnosis and Treatment: Neck or spine x-ray is usually recommended to diagnose the problem. MRI may also be necessary in certain cases. Other tests include EMG or nerve conduction velocity test. Patients may be asked to undergo physiotherapy that helps to reduce the pain with the use of stretches. Acupuncture and spinal manipulation with the help of massage therapist are also quite effective to treat the neck pain. Cold and heat packs also provide good results to get rid of Cervical Spondylitis.

Following home remedies also work wonders to say NO to neck pain:

  1. Taking fiber rich and healthy foods with vitamins is good.
  2. Taking raw garlic empty stomach in the morning gives good relief.
  3. Make a solution by mixing celery seeds, ginger root, cumin seeds and rock salt. Take the mixture with water before going to bed. You will get sufficient relief.
  4. Butter, vegetable soup, almonds and milk are useful for the ones that suffer from Cervical Spondylitis. They must refrain from refined flour, rice and kidney beans etc.
  5. Avoid taking junk or spicy foods. Use of tobacco and alcohol should also be restricted.
  6. Massage the painful area with ice to have sufficient relief.
  7. Hydration is a must to keep the body moisturized and free from dryness.

  12. Massaging with lukewarm sesame oil on the body is much advantageous. Hot fomentation is also good.
  13. One should stay away from mental or physical stress.
  14. Proper rest and good sleep are a must to say NO to this problem.
Rich diets, simple exercises and abstinence from harmful eatables, drinks and smoking are the simple tips to keep Cervical Spondylitis at great distance. Adherence of the above few steps also works wonders.
